Text description provided by the architects. This resort complex situated on the outskirts of the Charlevoix region includes a restaurant, steam bath, sauna, massage areas, hot and cold pools, and many relaxation spaces. These functions are shared among three pavilions articulated around a landscaped area bordering the river. The challenge was to highlight nature and integrate the functions through clean, contemporary architecture that respects the environment.
To unify the project grouping, the buildings’ envelope is a black-coloured wood covering. The various grades used give a more random texture, referring to vernacular structures. A walkway is cut through the east wall of the main building; this is the only distinctive element marking the entrance to the project. Once visitors enter the volume, the high ceilings and picture window project them into the exterior landscaping and the countryside.
The black-wood volumes are incised by large openings and terraces cut across the buildings. The project as a whole has been thought out as a pathway highlighting the surrounding nature and the outdoor facilities, as well as exploring the concept of spectator–actor. The interior spaces are uncluttered, giving the natural landscape the starring role. Bright colours are used only for specific elements, such as the restaurant’s large banquette and the steam bath.
